چکیده

T h e effect of variable tree canopy cover, shadows, and topography on Thematic Mapper (TM) data was examined for blue oak (Quercus douglasii) woodland and wooded grassland on rugged terrain in central California. Thematic Mapper data were analyzed from September 1986 (trees in leaf, grass understory senescent) and December 1984 (trees leafless, grasses emerging. Tree cover measured in 84 60 m x 60 m field plots was strongly negatively correlated with TM radiances (excluding Band 6) on both dates, and was positively correlated with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in September. TM Band 3 was most highly correlated with canopy cover. The Li-Strahler geometric-optical canopy reflectance model was used to predict the projected cover of shadow cast by the trees based on crown and illumination geometry. The spectral model was ag-

Species and Canopy Cover Map Development Using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Imagery for Grand Canyon National Park

Overstory vegetation maps of species and canopy cover were developed from Landsat 7 Thematic Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. Ecosystem Monitoring plot data, collected during the 1997-2001 field seasons, were used as training sites for the image classification. Sixty-two species classes and four canopy cover classes were mapped. The maps will be used to support a Joint Fire Science P...

Plant functional group responses to fire frequency and tree canopy cover gradients in oak savannas and woodlands

Questions: How do fire frequency, tree canopy cover, and their interactions influence cover of grasses, forbs and understorey woody plants in oak savannas and woodlands? Location: Minnesota, USA. Methods: We measured plant functional group cover and tree canopy cover on permanent plots within a long-term prescribed fire frequency experiment and used hierarchical linear modeling to assess plant ...

Continuous tree distribution in China: A comparison of two estimates from Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and Landsat data

[1] Forest change is a major contributor to changes in carbon stocks and trace gas fluxes between terrestrial and atmospheric layers. This study compares two satellite estimates of percent tree distribution data sets over China. One estimate is from the Chinese National Land Cover Data Set (NLCD) generated by a multiyear national land cover project in China through visual interpretation of Land...

Characterizing Western Juniper Expansion via a Fusion of Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Lidar Data

Juniper ; encroachment into shrub steppe and grassland systems is one of the most prominent changes occurring in rangelands of western North America. Most studies on juniper change are conducted over small areas, although encroachment is occurring across large regions. Development of image-based methods to assess juniper encroachment over large areas would facilitate rapid monitoring and identi...

Land cover mapping in support of LAI and FPAR retrievals from EOS-MODIS and MISR: classification methods and sensitivities to errors

Land cover maps are used widely to parameterize the biophysical properties of plant canopies in models that describe terrestrial biogeochemical processes. In this paper, we describe the use of supervised classification algorithms to generate land cover maps that characterize the vegetation types required for Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) retrie...
